Business of the Week: Callaghan’s Serves Up a Burger—and Helps Preserve Mobile History |
A Mobile institution since 1946 joins MobTown Burger Week with a specialty burger that sends $3 from every sale to Restore Mobile. |
Callaghan’s Irish Social Club has been part of Mobile’s story since 1946, and this week one of the city’s best-known neighborhood gathering places is giving locals another reason to stop by: MobTown Burger Week.
Running October 2 through October 11, 2026, MobTown Burger Week brings together more than two dozen participating restaurants across Mobile, each serving a specialty burger while helping raise money for Restore Mobile.
At Callaghan’s, the featured creation is the Blue Ribbon Boiler Maker Burger, made with PBR and Maker’s Mark beer cheese, caramelized onions and house-made crispy jalapeños.
For every Burger Week specialty burger sold, $3 benefits Restore Mobile, the nonprofit organization working to preserve and revitalize historic homes and neighborhoods throughout Mobile.
A Mobile institution since 1946
Callaghan’s sits at 916 Charleston Street in the Oakleigh Garden District, surrounded by the historic homes and tree-lined streets that give this part of Mobile so much of its character.
The story began in 1946, when Woodrow Callaghan opened the Irish Social Club as a neighborhood watering hole and grill.
In its earliest years, it operated as a members-only club, with patrons ringing a buzzer to get inside and some regulars even carrying their own door keys.
Those restrictions eventually disappeared, but the neighborhood-club atmosphere remained.
Today, Callaghan’s is often described as a kind of Oakleigh town hall — a place where longtime regulars, newcomers, musicians, visitors and neighbors all seem to cross paths.
The restaurant has built a reputation far beyond Mobile for its burgers, casual atmosphere and live music.
Its history page notes recognition from national and regional publications, while its stage has hosted both local musicians and touring artists over the years.
Callaghan’s is also known for its large St. Patrick’s Day celebration, one of the signature annual gatherings in the neighborhood.
The burger with a preservation connection
This week’s Burger Week special fits naturally with Callaghan’s reputation for burgers, but the event adds a community-purpose angle that makes the stop about more than lunch or dinner.
The Blue Ribbon Boiler Maker Burger combines a familiar pub-food foundation with a Burger Week twist: beer cheese made with PBR and Maker’s Mark, caramelized onions and crispy jalapeños.
Each one sold sends $3 to Restore Mobile.
Restore Mobile was founded in 1992 and focuses on rescuing and revitalizing deteriorated and vacant historic homes in Mobile’s older neighborhoods.
That mission makes Callaghan’s participation especially fitting.
The restaurant itself has spent eight decades as part of one of Mobile’s best-known historic districts, so a burger that helps support preservation connects the city’s food culture with the neighborhoods that help define Mobile.
Make it part of your Burger Week route
MobTown Burger Week encourages diners to visit participating restaurants, try the specialty creations and vote for their favorites.
The 2026 event runs through Sunday, October 11, giving Mobile-area diners several more days to make Callaghan’s one of their stops.
Callaghan’s regular menu also includes the classic burgers and sandwiches that have helped make the place a local favorite, along with daily specials and Sunday brunch offerings.
And because live music is such a big part of the Callaghan’s identity, checking the venue’s current music schedule can turn a Burger Week visit into a full evening out.
Callaghan’s Irish Social Club is located at 916 Charleston Street, Mobile, Alabama 36604.
Current posted hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Why it’s our Business of the Week
A Business of the Week feature should highlight more than a place to spend money.
It should tell readers something about the community around that business.
Callaghan’s does exactly that: an 80-year-old neighborhood institution serving a limited-time burger that helps preserve the historic neighborhoods around it.
If you have been looking for an excuse to revisit an old Mobile favorite — or finally see why Callaghan’s has built such a loyal following — Burger Week offers a timely one.
Order the Blue Ribbon Boiler Maker Burger, support Restore Mobile, and enjoy a little piece of Mobile history while helping protect more of it. |
